An old blog post I wrote in 2010 that’s still relevant:
Alan Turing helped the British Government break German Codes during World War II. In other words, he had vital knowledge of a very complex problem, and fought an intelligence war for the British against Adolf Hitler.
Oh, he was also gay.
To follow my thought through, we need visit the medieval ages; during that time some of the most homophobic literature in history was being circulated. The aim of these pamphlets, books and speeches was to instill fear amongst men that same-sex relations was a degrading act that was contaminating to everyone in society. During the 13th and 14th Century (the period I concern myself most with) there was even a mild tolerance for female prostitution, as society would rather a male relieve himself at a brothel than with another man.
Back to Alan Turing. In 1952, he was convicted of homosexuality and as an alternative to a prison sentence, made to take treatment with female hormones to lower his libido.
I can’t imagine the humiliation he went through. After having helped Britain win the war, the same government made him feel an alien in his own home. They claimed he had broke the law in being gay, and that his desires should be chemically castrated, should he wish to avoid a prison sentence.
Homophobic pamphlets, books and speeches were used in medieval times; Alan Turing was used in the 20th Century.
On 7 June 1954, Alan Turing committed suicide.
